Kampong Glam Tour: The Other Port Town
Thursday, 22 February, 9am–12pm | Fee: $15 (includes audio guide rental); exclusive of Malay Heritage Centre $6 fee (waived for SCs, PRs, Friends of the Museums members)

On this tour, we will explore one of the most colorful districts of Singapore – Kampong Glam – where the Malay Royalty once resided among Javanese, Sumatrans, Arabs, and Chinese communities who left their mark in different ways.

Walk along Kampong Glam’s outlying area on Victoria Street and learn about Malabar Muslim community, then you will visit tombs of Malay royalty dating back to 1820s. In cooling air of the nearby Malay Heritage Centre (former Sultan’s Palace), get mesmerised by history of Malays, their heritage and culture.

After a refreshing stop for coffee, walk through the streets and lanes, and listen to the stories behind. Why the stretch of Bussorah street was known as Kampong Kaji (Pilgrim Village) or part of Beach Road as Kampong Tembaga (Copper Village)? What made the resident of Gedung Kuning (Yellow Mansion) rich and famous?

And finally discover a little gem Masjid Hajjah Fatimah that escaped the redevelopment of the area.
